The Axolotl (pronounced Ax-o-loh-til) is a neotenic salamander. It is similar to a frog in the sense that it begins life as a fish, but if there is iodine in the water, it becomes a salamander. An axolotl can remain as a large fish for its entire life if it does not become a salamander. The axolotl is a critically endangered species.
